It’s safe to say that the last few years have brought amazing advancement with technology for consumers. Never have we been able to glide our fingers across a screen and get a device to do what we want. If you’re feeling overwhelmed with being caught in the future, don’t worry-- you are not alone.
With these new gadgets getting smaller and smaller, consumers have to figure out a solution to store data. In the past, we used floppy disks and that moved on to CD storage and then to USB drives. This allows us to store items and not clog up a computer’s storage. Now that we’ve advanced to these on-the-go devices, the need to have better storage has gone online. That’s what we call the cloud. Instead of carrying around a removable storage device (such as a USB drive) we can now use the internet to store our photos, documents, and videos. The beauty is being able to access it anywhere with an internet connection. No more carrying around the right device and forgetting it at home.
You can access cloud based services with internet access. Some are free for a certain amount of storage and then you pay to expand. If you have a tablet or smart phone, you can download a cloud service and it’ll automatically store your photos to access later. This is great in case anything happens to your device, you can still access your photos somewhere else.
Think of Facebook and how users can post photos. Those photos are then saved in an album online. You’re able to access those photos as long as you can access the internet. This is essentially how cloud storage works.
List of cloud services:
Dropbox is a cloud service that will automatically store your photos from your phone. You can also download it to your computer and store documents and access it somewhere else later.
Google also has Google Drive which allows you to create and save documents, spreadsheets, and photos. You can also share it with your friends. Google+ allows you to save photos from your smart device automatically as well.
iCloud is a cloud program for Apple product users. It backs up your files on your phone, tablet, and computer as well. You can access it using your Apple ID.
The best thing about the cloud is how easy it is to back up your data in case anything happens to the hardware. You’ll be able to access it even if you are traveling and you can also share with your friends as long as you have internet access.
