First of all, congratulations on owning your first tablet! It's hard to believe tablets were released in 2010. It has come far in how we do every day things. Even if it isn't connected to the internet, you can use it to take photos and videos, use the calendar, play games on apps (applications) that have already been downloaded, and take notes.
But having an internet connection is really going to boost your experience. Here's how you do it:
1. Get internet connection through a provide such as Comcast or AT&T U-verse. They can set you up with internet through a modem. You'll pay a monthly bill and rent the modem from them. Prices can range from $30-$100 depending on how fast you need your internet to be and the size of your home. If you're only checking e-mail and looking up websites, you won't need such high speed, but if you plan on watching online video then you're going to want to speed up your internet. Talk to your provider about what is right for you.
2. A modem will give you internet through a hard connection which is a wire connected to your computer or laptop. What you need to access internet wirelessly is a router. A router is a device that connects to your modem and sends out a signal (WiFi) to your devices. Some modems have built-in routers, such as the new modem from Comcast, so you won't need to purchase a separate one. If you do need to buy one, you can purchase it at a variety of stores like Target, Walmart, Best Buy, and Radio Shack. It's a one time cost (about $30 and up) and is fairly easy to set-up. The router will need to be plugged into an outlet and will have a cable to connect into the back of your modem. On your computer, you can access a website designated to your router and put in information such as the router name and password so others in the nearby can't access your WiFi.
3. Once your router is set up, you can test the connection by going into your mobile device (an iPad in your case) and go to Settings. Once in Settings, look for Wireless Connection option. Select the name of your WiFi and put in your password. The top bar should show a bar with lines. That indicates if you are connected. Test your connection by opening a web browser (Safari on iPad) and seeing if a website shows up.
Voila! You're online! Now you can check your e-mail, browse the web, download games and music, and so much more!
